Rockstar Games, the creator of the Grand Theft Auto series, has been shaken by GTA 6 leaks recently circulated through an account named "CyberLeek." The emergence of 10 different gameplay videos and images containing the game's full map within a short period of six days has prompted Take-Two Interactive to take action. The company is working to identify the individuals or groups behind the leaks by sending subpoenas to platforms such as Microsoft, Discord, and X. This security breach is being viewed as a major operational crisis ahead of the company's planned official announcement.

What Do the Leaks Mean Compared to Hot Coffee?

Amidst this chaos, Obbe Vermeij, who served as a technical director at Rockstar North between 1995 and 2009, called for calm in the gaming community via a statement on social media. Describing the leaks as "nothing," Vermeij stated that they would not affect the future success of the game. The experienced developer argued that while Rockstar follows a strategy of keeping its games secret for a long time, the images currently circulating online will have a very limited impact on the game's general audience. According to him, 90% of the gaming world does not follow leaks and wants an experience free of spoilers.

Vermeij compared the situation to the infamous "Hot Coffee" scandal of 2005. Reminding everyone that the game was pulled from shelves, caused millions of dollars in losses, and brought the studio to the brink of closure during the Hot Coffee era, the former executive emphasized that the current GTA 6 leaks have not caused damage of that scale. Addressing claims that the leakers possess a working build, Vermeij noted that such builds can only run on development kits (devkit) and that it is impossible to achieve that level of performance on current commercial PS5 hardware. Although demoralizing for Rockstar employees, the general industry consensus remains that GTA 6 will achieve a commercial success that will define the coming decades.
