Showcased during Gamescom 2026, The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past is capturing attention with details that have fans buzzing with excitement. Arriving 12 years after the launch of the main game, this unexpected third expansion aims to breathe new life into the story of Geralt of Rivia. It feels as though Geralt is set for an unforgettable finale before passing the mantle of the main protagonist to Ciri in the series' fourth installment.

The one-hour demo showcased focused on a quest titled 'A Bed of Thorns.' This mission takes the narrative to Letten, the hometown of Dandelion (Jaskier). Shedding light on Dandelion's noble past and his family, this chapter sees Geralt navigating tense family dinners and embarking on a journey alongside Dandelion's cousin, Lilla. A collaborative effort between CD Projekt Red and Fool's Theory—a studio founded by former employees—the production appears to successfully maintain the atmosphere and character depth of the original game based on initial impressions.

A New Adventure in the Spirit of Blood & Wine

In terms of gameplay mechanics, the most notable detail is Geralt's return to using his silver chain, which we are familiar with from the 2007 debut title. This combat technique, demonstrated against a creature called a Swarmion, adds a classic yet effective layer of depth to the combat system. With its visual splendor and peaceful atmosphere, the Letten region is reminiscent of the legendary Toussaint area from the Blood & Wine expansion. According to statements from CD Projekt Red, the scope of this expansion will be similar to that of Blood & Wine.

Tracing Dandelion's path with Lilla and venturing into a mysterious location called the 'Garden of Thorns,' this story serves as a nostalgic farewell for fans of the series. Expected to launch next year, Songs of the Past is prepared to cap off the The Witcher 3 experience with both its narrative storytelling and technical quality.
