A new discovery that has excited fans of the Resident Evil series is making waves in the gaming world. Known community modder Keff0 has discovered 671 unused audio recordings and subtitle files in the PlayStation 5 version of Resident Evil 4 Remake that were not present in the PC version of the game. These audio files, which account for approximately 30 minutes of content, include fully recorded dialogue from Leon, Luis, Ashley, and the iconic Merchant character.

The Merchant and The Duke Connection

The most notable among the discovered audio files is a dialogue in which the Merchant mentions The Duke from the game Village. The Merchant's line, "Ah, I see you've taken to the villages. The Duke? That boy shows promise," proves that Capcom intended to create a direct link between Resident Evil 4 Remake and Resident Evil Village. Interestingly, in Village, The Duke also references the Merchant from Resident Evil 4 while inspecting his wares, saying, "What are you buying? Haha, a phrase from an old friend." While the removal of this dialogue may have missed an opportunity to reinforce the chronological continuity of the series, some fans argue that forcing a modern character into a classic structure could have harmed the game's atmosphere.

Merchant Killing Mechanic and Other Details

The files discovered by Keff0 are not limited to just audio recordings. Analyses reveal that, much like in the original game, a mechanic where the Merchant could be killed was also planned during the Remake's development phase. According to the found animations and save data, players were able to kill the merchant, and his shop would remain closed for the rest of the game after his death. While it is not exactly known why Capcom removed this mechanic and the dialogue containing the link from the final version, it is speculated that the development team aimed for a more streamlined experience in the modern structure. Such cut content, which is frequently encountered in high-budget game development processes, serves as significant evidence for Resident Evil fans regarding what goes on behind the scenes of the series.
