The idea of bringing the world of League of Legends to a massive multiplayer online role-playing game (MMO) created immense excitement when it was first announced in August 2021. In the five years since, the project has undergone numerous structural changes within Riot Games, witnessed the departure of key developers, and even saw its development process completely reset in 2024. However, while answering questions from Kinda Funny Games' Greg Miller at PAX, Riot Games co-founder Mark Merrill confirmed that the project is still in active development and represents a "holy grail" mission for the studio.

Riot Games' MMO Vision and Challenges

Merrill humorously addressed the project's difficulty, noting that many brave knights might perish along the way in this "holy grail" quest, but emphasized that the magnitude of the goal makes all these challenges worthwhile. Stating that Riot is well aware of player expectations, Merrill highlighted that the critical factor lies in successfully bringing those expectations to life. While the executive acknowledged the difficulty of maintaining the company's culture during such a large-scale project, he expressed optimism for the future.

Despite this, significant skepticism remains within the player community, fueled by some of Riot's recent decisions. The recent news that development on the fighting game project 2XKO is being scaled back due to low player interest has sparked fears that the MMO might face a similar fate. On social media, many users have commented on their concerns that Riot tends to shelve projects quickly if they are not perceived to be "as big as WoW."

The future of the project continues to be a complex journey. While the 2024 "reset" and the addition of former World of Warcraft producer Raymond Bartos to the team have provided a glimmer of hope for some fans, general uncertainty persists. Although Riot management maintains that their silence is due to them "working hard," there is still no concrete release date or specific detail regarding the project's completion.
