Update on the 'Gas Scent' Controversy in Marvel's Wolverine
The 'scent trail' visual that drew backlash from Marvel's Wolverine players has been adjusted with a new update from Insomniac Games to be less distracting.

Since the release of Marvel's Wolverine, one of the most discussed topics among gamers has been the visual effects representing Logan's abilities. Specifically, a post on social media by Washington Post reporter Gene Park, in which he likened the character's scent trails to a form of "gas" and described it as "fart gas," quickly sparked a debate online. Many players argued that this visual effect disrupted the game's atmosphere and diminished the sense of exploration.
Insomniac Games Responds to Feedback
In response to the intense criticism, Insomniac Games has released a new update for the game. In the patch notes shared on their official website, the development team announced that changes have been made to the visual presentation of the "Scent Trails" and "Audio Sense" indicators. With this update, the opacity of these effects has been reduced, providing players with more subtle visual feedback that is less straining on the eyes.
The studio also stated that they would not stop at just visual adjustments. Future updates are expected to include options that allow players to completely turn off or customize these scent trails. Although one of the game's directors, James Stevenson, had previously explained that these effects represent Logan's mutant abilities and tracking skills, the development team did not hesitate to take steps to improve the player experience. Marvel's Wolverine delivered a strong commercial performance, reaching approximately 1.9 million units sold within its first three days on the PlayStation 5 platform.
