Rust: New Character Models Arrive with the 'Built Different' Update
The 'Built Different' update, which completely revamps Rust's 10-year-old character models, has arrived with new armor sets and the M16A2 rifle.

A major day has arrived for the Rust community. Facepunch has released the "Built Different" update, which fundamentally replaces the game's character model, which had remained unchanged for nearly 10 years and had fallen behind modern standards. This update is not just a visual improvement; it stands out as a foundational renovation that paves the way for future animation and character development processes. Your characters will now have more realistic proportions, a new skeletal system, and detailed facial features.
Character Models and Details
With the new model, the characters' faces, hair, and beards have been completely overhauled. Thanks to the new anisotropic shader technology used, hair now looks much more natural. Furthermore, many small details, from eyelashes to eye lighting, have been integrated into the game's atmosphere. The developers state that they have preserved the fundamental characteristics of the characters, such as race and gender, so your randomly assigned identities will not change entirely. Of course, while this visual richness brings performance concerns, the team emphasizes that the new technical infrastructure facilitates optimization processes and will be continuously monitored to ensure performance remains stable.
New Equipment and the M16A2
The update brings not only visual changes but also content that directly impacts gameplay. There are now new high-tier items in the game that cannot be crafted by hand and can only be found in the world. The "Ballistic Armour" and "Battle Dress Uniform (BDU)" sets will increase your chances of survival in the late game. However, to obtain this armor, you will need to enter dangerous areas on the map and scavenge rather than relying on the crafting table. Additionally, the M16A2, a military-grade rifle, is now making its way to the fields of Rust. Offering a high hit rate with its burst-fire mode, this weapon can also only be obtained through end-game loot. The struggle for survival in the Rust world has become more challenging and rewarding than ever; you must now fight for the best equipment.
